World Cities Seen by Satellite
With the exception of the World Data, these images are from the ASTER Satellite instrument and are obtained from the United States Geological Survey's
EROS
Data Center.
They have a pixel size of approximately
15 metre and include data from the visible spectrum and near infra-red
wavelengths. This relatively small pixel size makes these images
well suited to detailed studies of the Earth's surface and the broader aspects
of the urban environment.
The original data were collected by the Japanese
ASTER
instrument on NASA's TERRA satellite.
These are false-colour images constructed from two bands in the
visible wavelength range and one near-infrared band. The images
have been constructed with the near-infrared band drawn in green
colours. This mostly represents green vegetation.
In these images, human intervention in the environment such as
roads, buildings and bare ground usually show in purple tones.
