Introduction
Earthinsite uses a Java applet for its Selection and
Enhancement tools because this provides useful local processing capabilities (for example the
Zoom button and the
Lighten button). The "flip-side" of using Java though is that some
older browser/computer combinations will not be able to use Earthinsite.
Computers that are behind "fire-walls" and "proxy servers" will also experience problems accessing Earthinsite
if these barriers are specifically set up to exclude web pages which have embedded java applications.
For those people who cannot currently access the Earthinsite tools, we have included 2 screen-shots here to
illustrate Earthinsite.
Solutions to Some Common Problems
Old Browsers
If you are using an old version of your WWW browser software such as Netscape 2 or
Mosaic then you will not be able to use Earthinsite because the browser does not support
the Java used by Earthinsite.
The best solution is to download an upgraded version of the software. For
example copies of Netscape and Internet Explorer are available on other sites on the Web.
Slow Macintoshes
For some reason Apple Macintosh computers run the Earthinsite Java applets quite slowly.
This apparently has something to do with the way in which Macs run Java and doesn't
appear to have anything to do with the amount of memory that the Mac has or even its
cpu speed. There isn't any known fix for this problem at the moment.
Firewalls
Many larger organisations keep their Internet-connected computers behind a "firewall"
to prevent unauthorised access to their computers. One of the options commonly
used in firewalls is to prevent the downloading of Java applets on to the computers
behind the wall. If your computer is behind such a firewall then you will not be able to
use Earthinsite.
One solution used by some organisations is to connect up one computer directly to the
Internet through a dial-up connection. This computer is not connected to any of the
other computers in the organisation and is therefore effectively quarantined. Users
within the organisation wanting to use Java services such as those provided by Earthinsite
can then access these services from the quarantined machine.
Cookies
Earthinsite uses "cookies" to allocate processing sessions on our WWW server and image
processing system. A "cookie" is a small piece of information sent by a web server to
store on a web browser so it can later be read back from that browser. You can read
more about "cookies".
In some WWW browsers it is possible to explicitly stop
the handling of "cookies." To use Earthinsite, "cookies" must be enabled. We use them to separate
what you're doing from what the other users on the system are doing at the same time. That
way, you get to see your images, not somebody elses! If you have not already enabled your computer to accept "cookies" then follow these steps:
Internet Explorer
- On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab.
- Click Custom Level.
- Under Cookies click one of the radio buttons.
Netscape
- On the Edit menu in Netscape, choose Preferences
- Click the Advanced category.
- Under Cookies click one of the radio buttons.
