Geoselection Tool Help

Welcome to the Earthinsite Selection Tool

The Earthinsite Selection Tool provides a mix of fast local processing capabilities and powerful remote access to a spatial data engine which is built around the Australian ER Mapper software package.

You can use this prototype to zoom around in the images that appear in the window.

What the Buttons in the Earthinsite Selection Tool Do

Overview

The "Overview" button is used to redraw the currently selected overview image. At the moment there are 4 types of overview image available:
  • World
  • Australia
  • Dataset, and
  • Last Processed
You choose these by clicking on the "Zoom To:" list at the bottom left corner of the Earthinsite Tool. If you select "World" from this list, the image will change accordingly.

Zoom

Drag a box around an area of interest using the left button of the mouse. Now click on the "Zoom" button. This does simple image processing on your own computer of the area that you selected with the mouse. This has the advantage of being fast and of not requiring network traffic.

Show Data

Clicking on this button draws green boxes on the image window showing the locations of data currently available through Earthinsite.

Select Data

This button leads to a list of the data currently available through Earthinsite for the window that you drew with the Zoom button. This list shows a "thumbnail image" of each dataset. To choose one of these datasets to explore with Earthinsite, just click on the thumbnail.

Earthinsite will return you to the main geoselection tool and the image you chose will appear in the window.

You can use the "Zoom" to delve into this image with local processing, or you can use Earthinsite's remote processing capabilities to see the image in higher resolution.

Process Image

If you draw a box with the mouse on an image that you have selected and you click on the "Process Image" button, you will run a processing job on Earthinsite. After a short wait you will a see higher quality view of the image. The quality of the image that Earthinsite sends you will depend on the quality of the original data that is held here and on the level of zooming that you have requested.

You can repeatedly draw boxes (with the mouse) and press the "Process Image" button to zoom closer and closer into the data.

Show Details

This button allows you to see the data that you have selected. You can copy the images available from the "Show Details" button in the normal way with your browser software (e.g. for a PC you would place the mouse cursor over the image and press the mouse's right button).

Refresh

This button redraws the image in the Earthinsite Selection Tool's window.

Enhance Image

This button takes you to the Earthinsite Image Enhancement Tool which provides a range of local and remote image processing capabilities.

Help and Tips

Earthinsite uses a Java applet for the Geoselection tool because this provides for local processing capabilities (for example the Zoom button). The "flip-side" of using Java though is that some browser/computer combinations will not be able to use Earthinsite.

Older computers and those behind "fire-walls" and "proxy servers" may experience problems for this reason. Some specific information is available which may help you to get around these problems.
