Welcome to the Earthinsite Enhancement Tool
The Earthinsite Enhancement Tool provides a mix of fast local image processing capabilities and
powerful remote access to a spatial data engine which is built around the Australian
ER Mapper software package.
You can use this prototype to process the image that you selected with the Earthinsite
Geoselection Tool. You can also zoom around in the image in the same way that you can
in the Geoselection Tool.
What the Buttons in the Earthinsite Enhancement Tool Do
The controls in the Enhancement Tool are again divided into local processing and remote
processing functions. The buttons on the left side of the tool are for
local processing using your own computer. This has the advantages of being
relatively fast and of not requiring Internet traffic.
The buttons on the right side of the Enhancement Tool are for remote processing
using Earthinsite. These buttons provide access to a range of advanced image processing
functions from the ER Mapper software.
Local Processing
Zoom
The "Zoom" button is used to move around within the image. There are 4 options
available:
- In
- Out
- Max Zoom Out, and
- Last Processed
To Zoom In just draw a box with the mouse like you do in the Geoselection Tool
and then click on the Zoom button and choose "In". The Zoom Out function
can then be used to lower the amount of zoom.
Note: You can only zoom out as far as the initial state of zoom when you
entered the Enhance Tool. If you need to zoom out further you need to use the
Geoselection Tool and set its Zoom To: button to "Data Set".
Lighten
To brighten the image in the Enhance Tool's window, click on this button. The more
you click on it, the more the image's brightness will increase.
Darken
To darken the image in the Enhance Tool's window, click on this button. The more
you click on it, the more the image's brightness will decrease.
Colour Sliders
The 3 colour slider controls at the bottom left corner of the Enhance Tool are used to
alter the colour balance of the image. This is local processing again so it does not
require any Internet traffic.
Note: To put any changes into effect, you must click on the
Apply Filter button.
Apply Filter
Click on this button to apply any changes that you made with the Colour Sliders.
On most computers, pressing this button results in a rapid redraw of the image.
Note: On some Macintosh computers, screen redraw seems to be quite slow. This
is presumably due to the way that Java is implemented on some of these machines.
Return to Geosel
If you click on this button, you will return to the Geoselection Tool and
the image that you had in the Enhance Tool will appear there.
Note: Any local processing that you did in the Enhance Tool will be lost when
you return to the Geoselection Tool.
Reset Filter
Clicking on this button undoes the effects of the Lighten and Darken buttons
and the effects of using the colour sliders.
Remote Processing by Earthinsite
To use the various remote processing functions provided by Earthinsite, you firstly make
your choices from the Sharpen, Colour Table and Transform buttons
and then you click on the Process Image button.
Sharpen
This button allows you to apply an edge enhancement filter to an image. This tends to
improve the resolution of the edges of features particularly when you are zoomed in
within an image.
You can choose various levels of sharpening from very little to very much. The greater
the degree of sharpening that you choose, the less tonal detail you will see in the
resulting image.
Note: The Sharpen button requires a considerable amount of
processing on the Earthinsite system and you will consequently have to wait longer for images
to be delivered. It is generally best therefore to only use Sharpen on
"zoomed in" images.
If you use this button with "zoomed out" images, your processing job is likely to take
too long and will be killed.
Colour Table
This button provides access to the standard ER Mapper "Colour Look-up Tables". By choosing
different entries on this list you can process the image to highlight different
features.
Transform
Four options are available from this button:
- None
-
This leaves the image's tonal content unchanged
-
- Histogram
-
This adjusts the image's appearance by applying a "histogram equalisation" transform to the
image based on it's statistics.
-
- Gaussian
-
This adjusts the image's appearance by applying a "Gaussian equalisation" transform to the
image based on it's statistics.
-
- Clip
-
This adjusts the image's appearance by applying a "Linear Clip" transform. When you choose
"Clip", the Clip % button becomes active. You can choose different values of
"Clip %" to produce various image effects. The exact effect you produce each time will
depend both on the details of the image that you are working with and on the settings
of the other buttons in the Enhancement Tool.
-
Process Image
This button causes Earthinsite to process the image in the ways that you have chosen with the
Sharpen, Colour Table and Transform buttons.
Flammability
This check button is used to run the algorithm used by the ACT Emergency Services Bureau
to assess the bushfire risk in the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding areas of
New South Wales.
Note: This processing option can only be used for the AVHRR datasets (the
images covering SE Australia). Choosing this option with the other datasets in Earthinsite
will have no effect.
Colour Drape
This check button applies a "colour drape" to the image which has the effect of creating
a "false terrain" view. Colours in the image are taken to represent elevations and a
3D surface is constructed. What you see in the image window is a view of this
surface made with illumination from the north east.
Buy Image
In Earthinsite, this button is disabled as the data sets you see have been generously
donated for demonstration only purposes by a range of data providers. They must not be used in
any commercial application without first obtaining the permission of the data owner.
