Earthinsite is a WWW-based, one-stop shop for all earth
and environmental data (eg. remotely sensed data, topographic
data, geoscience data and land-use data) and associated value-added
products, including thematic maps, satellite posters and maps. Earthinsite permits the harmonisation
of data from different sources and delivers data and information
products tailored to specific end-user needs.

At the core of Earthinsite lies the development of an interactive, web-based
software system which:
- incorporates seamless and rapid access to very large environmental
data sets housed in many different organisations and data formats
- enables straightforward commercial transactions between data suppliers and clients
- facilitates the production of value added products by third
party operators to deal with the diversity of client needs
- links with high speed data networks and automated mass storagesystems.
Earthinsite Products
There are three main types of data products that are available through Earthinsite:
- A range of remotely sensed satellite images and aerial photography all of which can be purchased by users. Such products include high resolution aerial photography of major Australian urban and rural locations ( www.city2see.com) and sea surface temperature and sea colour products of the oceans surrounding Australia (www.seasurface.com.)
- A variety of printed posters of Australia and the World produced from remotely sensed satellite images all of which can be purchased by users.
- A variety of remotely sensed images and maps which are of general interest to WWW users. This part of Earthinsite, which

All products integrate and harmonise data from a
number of existing data sources and suppliers. In this sense,
Earthinsite is a "one-stop shop" delivering products directly to the end-user.
The essence of Earthinsite is the delivery of integrated high-level
processed data and information directly into the hands of people.
The majority of the processing and harmonising of the data is automated by Earthinsite.
The Earthinsite WWW
To use Earthinsite Internet products you only need an Internet connection and a
standard WWW browser. No specialist software or WWW "plug-ins" are required.
Earthinsite uses a mix of fast local processing, on the user's computer, and a powerful
remote image processing engine based on the industry-standard ER Mapper software.
Local processing capabilities are provided through platform-independent
Java applets. These permit the user to make rapid
improvements to the images without the need for Internet traffic. At the back-end
of Earthinsite is a full-featured image processing system based on custom calls to ER Mapper.
This brings to the user the ability to perform sophisticated image processing without
the reliance on specialist software or training.
